Many times, most of the gardeners ask me why the grass turns yellow and stops growing in winter? Most of them know its cause of cold weather. But of course, after watching football fields all green, how it can be the field of the green whole year. What we have to do to have at home a green lawn all year round?

The first thing is to do a study about what temperatures we are living in, are the summers hot and the winters mild? There is a type of seed, are the winters very cold and in summer it does not exceed 30º? There is another type of seed. The key to having the green lawn all year round is replanting, to have the perfect lawn we have to do two replanting a year, the first at the beginning of October and the second in March.

In October, we will sow seeds that will withstand the low temperatures and in March, we will reseed again with seeds that hold high temperatures to ensure that everything is well packed.

Types of seed for winter

English Ray grass (Lolium perenne) – This type of grass is one of the most used in the world, it is found in almost all the mixtures of seeds found in department stores, Ray grass germinates very early (5-7 days) and It adapts very well to cold climates, with warm summers and cool nights. It is not usually replanted alone; it is usually mixed with other species to have a green lawn all year.

Poa Pratensis – Resists most diseases, also drought. It is slow to leave, it is recommended to mix with Ray grass, it does not resist high temperatures, mixed with moisture they prevent the development of this plant.

Festuca arundinacea – This type of lawn is quite resistant to high temperatures and low temperatures. Nevertheless, it is a dense lawn, so it does not have to be planted alone, always mixed with other species. Does not support low cuts.

Types of grass for summer

Catalan grass – It is used a lot on the Mediterranean coast for its great resistance to everything (except the cold) adapts to any type of soil but it is not pleasant to step barefoot.

Bermuda (Cynodon action) – Is the grass of the sun, heat, and light loses its green color when temperatures fall below 10º.

Kikuyu grass- Tolerates high temperatures but loses color in shady places and in winter. Very common in mixtures and very resistant to trampling

Knowing these mixtures and using them well, you will not have problems to have a green lawn all year round.
